The Savannah Way - One of Australia's Wildest Road Trips

The Savannah Way is the kind of trip that reminds you just how big and untamed Australia really is. Stretching from Queensland to WA, it’s a mix of red dirt, river crossings, remote stations, and some of the best camping you’ll ever find. It’s rough, raw, and absolutely addictive.
Road Conditions & Tips
This isn’t a Sunday drive. Expect corrugations, bulldust, washouts, and long stretches with no one else around.
We always air down the tyres early, take it slow, and let the car (and our nerves) settle into the rhythm of the outback. A bit of prep goes a long way out here.
Our Favourite Stops Along the Way
Camping on the Roper River
The Roper River is one of those places that feels untouched. Crystal-clear water, great fishing BUT not swimming due to the massive snapping handbags (crocodiles)!.
It is that peaceful NT stillness that hits you right in the chest.
Camping here is simple, quiet, and exactly what you want after a long day on the dirt. Sunsets over the river are something else.
2. Seven Emu Station — A Must-Do
Seven Emu is one of the most memorable stays on the entire route.
It’s remote, it’s rugged, and the fishing is next level. We still talk about the massive barramundi we saw on the drone and sharks swimming next to them — snag either one of thoses and that is proper bragging-rights.
The station owners are legends, the campsites overlook the untamed river and country, and the whole place feels like a secret you’re lucky to be let in on.
The Southern Lost City - Amazing
The campground is located steps from one of the most stunning rock formations we have in Australia. Towering columns that transform as the day passes, intimidating during the day but take on an inviting warm glow as golden hour highlights their deep red colours.
The walk is not long and well worth it, maybe not when the temperature is in the high 40's (like we did) but absolutely worth it.
Hells Gate Roadhouse
Hells Gate is classic outback: dusty, quirky, and full of character.
It’s the perfect spot to top up, stretch the legs, and swap stories with other travellers who’ve just rattled their way across the same rough tracks.
The name fits — but in a fun way.
5. Gregory on the Gregory River
This one is Brett’s favourite free camp in all of Queensland, and honestly, it’s hard to beat.
The Gregory River is bright blue, fast-flowing, and perfect for floating, swimming, or just sitting with your feet in the water while the world slows down.
The campsite is peaceful (depending on what time of year you are there) and completely free — the kind of place you plan to stay one night and end up staying a week.
Why We Love the Savannah Way
It’s not polished. It’s not predictable.
It’s the kind of trip where you earn every kilometre — and the rewards are unreal.
Remote rivers, wild camps, big barra, dusty roadhouses, and landscapes that change every hour.
If you’re chasing a proper outback adventure, the Savannah Way delivers in spades.
